Let’s talk about Ghost Pipe!
Ghost Pipe (Monotropa uniflora), aka ghost plant/Indian pipe/corpse plant, is my favorite plant to forage in Ohio!
Ghost Pipe an herbaceous perennial plant native to temperate regions of Asia, North America and northern South America. However, it is incredibly hard to find in other areas and is nonexistent in others. Ghost Pipe is considered rare and should be foraged ethically and with respect.
Ghost Pipe doesn’t have chlorophyll, which is why is has a bright white ghostly appearance. This plant is quite mysterious and depends on its beautiful symbiotic relationship with parasitic tree fungi.
She grows to 10 - 30 centimeters tall. You can find her growing in complete shade on stable forest floors where there is rich, moist soil, and near the base of trees. Above the ground you will find a delicate white translucent flower with only one flower per stem. The flowers first appear as bent, but will slowly straighten. Ghost Pipe should only be picked when the flower is pointed down towards the ground and completely white. Once picked, it should be placed in grain alcohol (vodka/moonshine 80 abv+) immediately. I usually bring a 32 oz mason jar half full of grain alcohol with me while I am out looking for Ghost Pipe in the Woods.
Cherokee tribes believed in this legend about Ghost Pipe:
The chiefs of the several tribes met together to try to resolve some issues peacefully. They smoked a peace pipe together and then argued for seven days and seven nights. The Great Spirit punished the chiefs for smoking the peace pipe before making peace with one another by turning the chiefs into Ghost Pipe flowers and made them grow where their relatives had been unkind to eachother.
